The Vice President for Student Affairs serves as the chief student affairs officer, reporting directly to the President. Spelman College is committed to a student development model that is characterized by intellectual inquiry and discourse within and outside the classroom.


In that context, the Vice President is responsible for creating and supporting an environment that promotes the growth and development of students and facilitates the process of learning. The Vice President is also responsible for program development, financial management and personnel administration for all student development functions, including Housing and Residential Services, Counseling Services, Disability Services, Health Services, International and Commuter Student Programs, Student Activities, Student Judicial Services, the Office of the Dean of the Chapel, and Athletics (NCAA Division III).


The position also works collaboratively with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and the faculty, serving as a member of the Provost Council to ensure an integrated, systematic approach to student development and success. The Vice President also serves as the primary advocate and spokesperson for the student affairs division to the College community and to the community at large.


Qualified applicants should have a minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including crisis management. Administrative experience on a residential liberal arts college campus is highly desirable. A graduate degree in a relevant field is required, an earned doctorate is preferred. Candidates should be knowledgeable about student development theory and demonstrate appreciation for the unique aspects of the goals and mission of a historically Black, women's college and success in working with a diverse student population. In addition, demonstrated effectiveness as a supervisor of student affairs professionals, proven leadership skills, and knowledge of best practices in student affairs is expected, as well as an ability to work effectively as part of a senior management team.
