Date Listed: Sep-22-08 1890-1940 Family Heirlooms ~ Rich Patina ~ Awesome Detail Right Down To Abe’s Hair Strands ~ Mixed Metal Art Deco Americana Design Style Belong In A Museum ~ Excellent Antique Appearance Considering Many Years Of Existence ~ Minimal Loss To Finish ~ Well Done With Good Quality Art
A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTSObviously someone believes this is among the very best depictions of the well-defined 16th President as the modeled replica is reminiscent of a famous side view by various artists on paintings, statues, and … uh … pennies. Typically, as in these two identical Abe Lincoln bookends, he looks serious and scholarly to the pervasive right.
The alloy bronze, a mixture of copper and tin, has given a soft bronze colored coppery patina. They have the look and feel, antique “solid bronze” and not “coated bronze” will give, but you are the final judge. It is probably a stronger metal ware of bronze plated cast iron because it is much heavier than copper and tin. Each hefty piece, weighing (unpacked) over 5 pounds, will easily support any row of books regardless of size. It is good to know each one alone, being solid and not hollow inside, makes an impressive doorstop.
GUARANTEED OLD, GENUINE & ORIGINALIf you are familiar with brass, you know it is subject to a corrosive chemical reaction that slowly weakens metal and causes it to crumble or break. More durable than brass, these bookends resisted corrosion and withstood the ravishing tests of time. I see a few places where the cast iron metal in bronze is scuffed, scratched and tiny fleabites appear, but overall they look pretty agreeable for wear and tear. I believe character of this nature supports the integrity of the antiquity.
I am unable to confirm the maker. They seem crafted of the finest pure bronze by an experienced artisan who has magnificently captured Lincoln in a moment of inner contemplation. When viewed in person, the expression subtlety changes with another angle.
CONDITIONBoth are virtually rust-free with an original classic brown finish and an excellent dark bronze copper gilded accent that is worthy of your approval. The surface might benefit from a light cleaning. Or else you just might appreciate its natural age toning. You will consider felt bottoms to protect bookshelves.
YOU WILL LOVE THESEA noble addition to the library or study, they are equally well suited to any Lincolniana or bookend enthusiast who is seeking the very finest and most rare of this theme. These will make a perfect give to a professional person, a graduate, on Father’s Day or to any one interested in the practicality of bookends and doorstops. Any way you welcome it, this investment will only increase in value as the years drift by and give great pleasure in owning and viewing.

RESEARCHHe is frequently considered a most sculpted person in history. Undoubtedly the most revered leader in America who has had more books written about him than all our nation’s presidents put together. Lincoln was the second child and first son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He was born February 12, 1809 on Sinking Spring Farm, then Hardin County, KY, 3 miles south of the present town of Hodgenville, Larue County, KY. Abe grew a beard because a little girl wrote him a letter telling him he would look more handsome. Even though he was a lawyer he never attended a college or university. He had no church affiliation yet was a man of great faith, courage and humanity. He was the first President from KY, served 2 terms and was Republican. Lincoln died at only 56 and was buried in Springfield, IL.
FACE VALUECalled two-faced by a rival, Lincoln responded, "If I had another face, do you think I'd wear this one?"
