Date Listed: Sep-04-08 1935-49 Rare Goebel. Sacred Madonna’s gentle innocence is Hummel’s trademark artisan style on winter white.
Fair Lady’s prayer hands are arranged ‘just so’ to loop your rosary beads over them for storage or decoration.
Franz Goebel artists converted into meticulously handcrafted 3-dimensional figures the drawings by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, a talented member of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis at the Convent of Siessen.
The first M.I. Hummel was introduced in 1935 at the Leipzig Fair, a major international trade show.
These timeless figural artworks of highest quality standards have since endured the test of time, and collectors worldwide continue to be fascinated by the pervasive child-like simplistic artwork the motifs present.
MARKINGS
“M. I. Hummel” in signature script form is impressed at back part of base. It’s an earlier circa 1935-1949 registered trademark of Goebel.
Turn it over, there’s a green “Western Germany” back stamp along with a blue V and a full honeybee. There’s an indented circle around this. 2 mold numbers appear on bottom: “46/0” and “10” pressed into a square.
