Describes the physical characteristics of this natural satellite and its relationship to the Earth throughout time. Tells about Galileo first studying moon mountains and craters through a telescope. Because the broad, flat plains looked like bodies of water, he named them ‘maria’ after the Latin for ‘seas’: The Sea of Showers and Sea of Tranquility. We learned a lot about the moon’s cheesy surface since then, but not until the Apollo 11 landing in 1969 did any human being set foot on it.
