Welcome. It’s always nice to have you here!
Allow me to present this old style kitchen tool for your approval. Petite mortar and pestle make a fine addition to either your alter or kitchen. While they have seen use, they still remain in wonderful vintage shape.
You are looking at GENUINE hand-carved white zebra (alabaster) marble. The stratification and curve definition of this unique stone say it all …
I believe you will be impressed with the simplicity of character.
MULTI TASKING MINI Fabulous hand-sized goblet not only withstands the impact and friction caused by the pounding of the pestle, the interior’s unpolished natural glossy state furnishes the necessary traction to shear, crush and crack the ingredients for medicinal or magical use.
COLLECTIBLES CONDITION Fine craftsmanship ~ Overall smooth finish inside & out ~ Natural sparkling bright ~ Very clean, clean & clean ~ White is white ~ Stone is the most durable material a pestle and mortar should be made from as it renders a heavy duty product that does not stain easily as this vintage set will attest … no staining! ~ I personally inspected all over ~ No chips or hairline cracks ~ Bowl interior and grinding tool’s tip is a bit of loss with nicks and surface scratches from decades of use ~ A fleabite to outside rim found by touch, otherwise barely noticeable and does not affect use or display value ~ Age-added integrity to the antiquity ~ Again, this is vintage so don’t anticipate brand new ~ It is highly collectible!
APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS Pestle Is 2-1/4” Long Overall x 1-1/4” At The Widest Portion Mortar Measures 2-5/16” In Diameter Across The Top & 1-1/2” Inside The Mouth, 1-5/8” Wide At Base & Stands 2-1/4” Tall
ONE-OF-A-KIND ART Here’s the familiar style of pedestal-based urn you see tucked into drug store nooks and crannies. But that’s as far as the likeness goes.
This marble is so light and airy, smooth and white, you can see fingertip images clear through the sides of the bowl (as in translucent bone china). Both pieces have the same carved linear design. There are no markings to identify this one of a kind. This natural material has a very wide provenance.
As an interior decoration, it will be noticed … that’s for sure!
A must for Asian cooking or any other chef. Great for crushing, grinding and mincing all your pharmaceutical Rx’s, medical and dentistry concoctions, and herbal remedies, unguents, incense, spices, what have you! As a household utensil, it is just the right size and density to make it easy to mix.
What a great complement to your Mortar & Pestle collectibles.
A mortar and pestle is an accessory used to crush, grind and mix substances. Pestle is a heavy stick whose end is used for pounding and grinding, mortar is a bowl. The substance is ground between the pestle and the mortar.
HISTORY
The English "pestle" derives from classical Latin "pistillum", meaning "pounder". The classical Latin "mortarium" led to the English "mortar", meaning, among several other usages, "receptacle for pounding" and "product of grinding or pounding". The Roman poet Juvenal applied both "mortarium" and "pistillum" to articles used in the preparation of drugs, reflecting the early use of the mortar & pestle as a pharmacist's or apothecary's symbol. These tools are well documented in some early literature, such as the Egyptian "Papyrus Ebers" of c. 1550 B.C.E. (the oldest preserved medical literature piece) and the Old Testament (Numbers 11:8 and Proverbs 27:22).
This pale yellowish pink to yellowish gray gypsum is called alabaster because its stone was found near Alabastron in Egypt, and from this circumstance the Greeks gave it the name of the city where it was made. The name was then given to the stone of which it was made (occurs only in the New Testament at Matt. 26:7; Mark 14:3; Luke 7:37 in connection with the costly box of ointment offered to anoint the head of Jesus as he sat at supper in the house of Simon the leper).
