City Description:In 1864, Union forces led by General William Tecumseh Sherman set fire to Atlanta then carved a path of destruction 60 miles wide on their way to Savannah. Sherman's "March to the Sea" is widely recognized as the first act of "total warfare", intended to sap the willingness of the general population to support their troops, rather than achieve traditional military objectives. Not surprisingly, Georgia still remembers and resents the event with astonishing clarity, and mementos are on display in every town that suffered through it. But if the past is not forgotten, Georgia has hardly been held back by it. Today's Atlanta is a cosmopolitan, diverse city -- the emblem of the "New South". Half the jobs in Georgia are located in the Atlanta Metropolitan area, and Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport Airport vies annually with Chicago's O'Hare for the title of "World's Busiest". Atlanta offers world-class restaurants and night-life, and sporting facilities that have hosted the Superbowl, the World Series, and the 1996 Summer Olympics. Outside Atlanta, the pace of life in Georgia slackens, and the Old South of Hollywood legend lives on, at least in pockets. Savannah is d for its antebellum mansions; its 21.5 square mile historic district is one of the largest in the US. Georgia's numerous wilderness areas include the famous Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, plus the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forest. The Lake Oconee region is also a golfing mecca, home to seven championship courses. Georgia's Coast Region offers sunny shores, gentle ocean breezes and purple-hued sunsets for a calm and relaxing setting. Serenity can also be found on such barrier islands as luxurious St. Simons or unspoiled Cumberland Island. Excitement and charm can be found in Savannah's interesting architecture and other attractions. Georgia's Historic South abounds with scenery and attractions indicative of its name, such as stately old homes and Civil War-era plantations. The Mountains Region of Georgia offers apple harvests, towering waterfalls, numerous hiking trails, immense valleys, and brook trout in streams bordered by rhododendrons. The Southern Rivers Region of Georgia is a natural setting for exploration. Hikers will enjoy the Pine Mountain Trail in F.D. Roosevelt State Park, and Providence Canyon State Conservation Park near Lumpkin. Near Pine Mountain lies one of Georgia's most spectacular attractions -- Callaway Gardens, a 14,000-acre resort with lakes, golf, bike trails, and the largest butterfly conservatory in the U.S. The region also boasts three popular wild animal parks at Pine Mountain, Albany and Valdosta. Other attractions include former President Jimmy Carter's boyhood farm in Plains; Andersonville National Historic Site, and (on its grounds) the National Prisoner of War Museum; wonderful examples of antebellum architecture in La Grange and Thomasville; and water recreation opportunities on the Chatahoochee and Flint Rivers and Lake Seminole. go to http://www.bonosearch.com/georgia/ for more information on Georgia and on any cities and towns in the State.
